Forklifts burn through cylinders on a work schedule, not a grilling season. At that frequency, how you buy propane — and at what per-gallon price — is an operating cost worth managing, not a rounding error.
The two supply models
Cylinder exchange programs
A supplier swaps your empties for full forklift cylinders on a route. Zero filling work for your team, predictable logistics — and a per-cylinder price that bundles the propane, the cylinder, delivery and service into one opaque number. Ask what it works out to per gallon before you renew.
Refilling your own cylinders
Where a qualified setup and trained personnel are in place, refilling prices propane transparently by the gallon — the same honest unit this site tracks for consumer stations. It demands proper equipment, training and compliance, which is why many small fleets start with exchange and negotiate from a known per-gallon benchmark.
Use the per-gallon benchmark either way
Even if you never fill a cylinder yourself, a verified local refill price — like the $2.98/gal verified in Anderson, CA (source: Shasta County tracker, checked Oct 2026) — is negotiating information. A $1/gal spread is worth about $4–$5 per 20-lb-equivalent of propane; multiply that by a fleet's weekly cylinder count and the annual figure justifies a phone call. Track the prices you actually pay, per gallon, per month: propane is a repeat purchase, and seasonal movement shows up in your own log first.
Condition and handling rules still apply
Damaged or out-of-certification cylinders must not be refilled — the same rule as consumer tanks. See recertification & expiry.
Cylinders are transported and stored upright and secured, per PERC/NPGA public safety material.
Filling operations belong to trained personnel with proper equipment — this guide covers buying models and cost math, not filling procedure. For procedure and compliance, go to the authorities: PERC safety resources and NPGA, plus your supplier and local fire code.
Know a fleet-relevant price?
If your business refills at a station that sells by the gallon to the public, report the price — it publishes labelled unconfirmed until verified.
